I haven't used the windows update site in a couple of weeks... when I go there now I only get this message w/ no options:

"Thank you for your interest in Windows Update

Windows Update is the online extension of Windows that helps you get the most out of your computer.

The latest version of Windows Update is available on computers that are running Microsoft Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows Millennium Edition, Windows 2000 (except Windows 2000 Datacenter Server), Windows XP, and the Windows Server 2003 family."
  2. go to start/run and type "notepad c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts" without the quotes, and hit enter. There will be a line that refers to windowsupdate with an ip address. Delete the line and save the file.

    Mine only had " localhost"

I tried deleting that anyway and it didn't work.

I've tried clicking on the "Windows Update" button on Microsofts homepage and that doesn't work either.

I get the message from above from this URL:

  4. Wow you probably want to have that localhost thing back in there if you still have the hosts file. Are you sure the file was empty, besides the local ip?

Yes, it was empty. I put it back the way it was:

once you have edited the hosts file you need to do

    ipconfig /flushdns

to reset it and make it check things out of the hosts file
