Wierd IE Problem

Discussion in 'Windows Desktop Systems' started by Nathan Alexande, Oct 6, 2003.

  1. Hi guys...I am working on my mother's computer...running Win2K Pro...and her IE has a problem. It will go to all sites, except for search engines. No matter what engine I try, IE will not open it. I am currently running a virus scan on it, and have already run Spybot...any other ideas? Also, all cache and cookies have been deleted.

Hmm, doesn't sound like it would be a DNS issue if IE can reach most other sites. You could try the "end all to be all" IE fix...

Open the command prompt and type the following, one at a time, hitting <enter> after each.

    regsvr32 urlmon.dll
    regsvr32 actxprxy.dll
    regsvr32 shdocvw.dll
    regsvr32 msjava.dll
    regsvr32 oleaut32.dll
    regsvr32 mshtml.dll
    regsvr32 browseui.dll
    regsvr32 shell32.dll
  3. Hmm...no viruses found. Spybot and AdAware came up short. Tried the above suggestion, and it did not work either...any other ideas???

  4. I forgot to mention that whenever I try to go to a search engine, the url of the error page puts "www.*.org" aroung my intended url. For example, if I type "www.google.com," than I get "www.www.google.com.org" as the url in the error page.

  6. I figured out that it was indeed that malicious code that screws with the DNS. It works now. Thanks, guys!

Interesting that I ended up seeing this same problem on a friend's computer tonight. I actually figured out that it was the hosts file before I came back and read the forum here, but it's good to know the trick (in the registry) to prevent it.
