[H]ard|OCP tries to answer the question, with an excellent review of an XPS system, tweaked up (non default config, medium price range comp - around 1300USD)

I've had some late nights flushing out Dells, and installing a fresh copy of XP Pro, and then tweaking. After, they always run amazingly well.
The default config of the software, is much bloatware, and the software bogs down the hardware.
My favorite part of the review is the tech support - for anybody that's ever dealt with them it is a frustrating, dishonest affair complete with abandoned calls, and false promises.
Dells can be managed. By default, they suck.
