A program on my computer is wanting me to tell it what COM port a usb cable is using? How do I find that out? I tried trial and error, but that didn't work. Any ideas?

Is it originally a USB cable, or a serial cable with a serial to USB adaptor?

The USB does not use any COM port unless it maps to a virtual COM port using the driver, like USB modems usually do. Then it's usually COM3 or COM4.
