Upgrade from Win98 2nd to XP,error

Failed setup to Upgrade from Win 98 2nd to XP Home on Pent lll/500 w/256k Intel 440BX mother,flashed bio once 2 years ago.
Error:SXS.DLL syntax error in manifest or policy file "C:\$win_nt$~LS\1386\asms\7000\msft\windows\mswincrt\mswincrt.man"on line 5
"One of the component Windows needed to continue setup could not be installed. A component file does not match the verification information present in the component manifest."

I can't speak Russian and I sure as hell don't know what this means either. Help please--please.

well don't do a upgrade install try a clean install should work much better

I did some searching on google for this error and found this on another forum

The problem is that your burned copy of XP has a file in the \i386\asms\6000\msft\windows\common\controls\ directory called Controls.man.
This file is corrupt. You can try to open it and it will give you an error. For some reason, copying the XP CD seems to cause this problem with Nero or Adaptec. It seems to do that at random, as i have tried to make a backup copy and two of them failed but the third one worked.
I have no idea why it does this.
You can copy the entire I386 directory to your HD and get a good copy of that file, and replace the damaged one on your HD, then just run \I386\winnt.exe to install
