Just a litle off topic.
I'm new to this theming of xp. Took me a while to catch on. When you download a theme that has a manual install do you swap over the shell32.dll to change the icons?

Some icons could be changed in that way yes.
of course you'd need to stop dllcache from replacing it, and create a backup of your original shell32.dll
