I have a 98 comp networked to, and using the internet through, an XP comp. The network has been working fine for months and just yesterday i installed a geforce2 mx 400 on the XP computer (im not sayin this is definitely the cause) and now niether computer recognises the other. the funny thing is that the lights on the back of the NIC are on and the XP computer says, in the network connections screen, that the LAN is "enabled". on the 98 comp (the client) its like the network and the XP comp dont exist, but on the XP comp, everything is normal but when i try to access the files on the 98comp it says i dont have access and to contact your sys admin which is a load of rubbish cos i had access yesterday. im very confused, and any ideas on what could be wrong would be great because atm the internet cant be used on the 98 computer.

Replace the GF2 with the old card again. If the problem goes away you probably have a hardware conflict, or at least almost since Windows doesn't report it. If not, the GF2 is not the fault.
