Sometimes you just stumble across something you've been looking for... the other day, I came accross NicePlayer: http://niceplayer.indyjt.com/

A fantastic little player, which you can resize as you wish, it's borderless, and uses all the quicktime codecs to play your content, and it has the option of sitting on top of other windows (Something I always use when using limited screen space).

    Fantastic I say :)

Looks like a nice little app, but i wish it would save it's playlists in a VLC compatible way. There is no point in having another way to make lists.

Video playback does not work properly on my iBook, plus the live resizing is really sluggish. I'll stick with VLC for now.

Playback and re-sizing worked fine on my iBook.

The only downside that I found is that it follows the region locks of your machine, so I can't play my R1 discs with it. VLC reigns again in that area.
