is team USA more about marketing than results?

a minor rant about something that has pissed me off since a coupla weeks before the olympics even began

    http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tm...2&u=/ap/20040815/ap_on_sp_ol/oly_swimming_swm

the thing I want to concentrate on is not michael phelps record attempt but rather the fact that a swimmer as great as gary hall jr was bumped off to feed the media frenzy for phelps..

if you look @ the team composition gary hall jr with his times and overall record would have been a better suited member of the team...

    why was he not included?

just before being bumped off the team in favor of phelps he had spoken out about the bumping off of other swimmers in the US relay team to allow phelps an opportunity @ tieing or (before this loss) breaking the record set by the incomparable spitz...

personally I have no problems with phelps attempting to do this... he still has an opportunity to tie the record for most medals @ one olympics in his grasp (8)... but to bump a proven short distance swimmer of the calibre of gary hall jr for a guy who is for the most part a longer distance swimmer (most of his individual events save the fly are 200m) makes no sense... hall had a faster qualifying time for his leg than phelps did in the event as well which makes this an even more puzzling decision

even IF he was included why not bump one of the other lads? like ian crocker who laid a turd on the first leg and saddled his team with what was ultimately an insurmountable deficit?

I just don't understand this decision making and the pressure on the teams from people who don't know better...

for crying out loud these lads are representing the United States of America... not VISA or American Express or Nike or Speedo or any other company with vested interests... why then should the TEAM suffer @ the hands of these interests?

    ----------------

another classic example is the current Dream Turd that bombed so magnificently against puerto rico of all teams...

the team is so obviously built for marketing its ridiculous...

no outside shooters... no play-maker (save a shoot-first marbury) and no interior presence save for tim duncan (who was completely blanketed today and received barely inlet passes from his team-mates)

I understand other big-name players are not present... but instead of sending the best marketed lads why not send people the TEAM could use and who actually know how to play as a TEAM?

carmello anthony and lebron james did nothing at all to help the team along and have not shown anything in the warmups the United States played... lebron hasn't even faced proper zone defence in his life (save for the token zone played in the NBA which is not like the zone in college or international basketball)

hopefully one day TEAM USA will go back to meaning more than marketing and actually represent the BEST the nation has to offer as a TEAM setup...

invidually we may have some of the best (and this is a fact) but as a TEAM we are sorely lacking in many disciplines where ego's and business men call the shots...

I think you answered your own question...and for the short of it, check my reply in the other thread...

If you want to say that in many ways America has grown rather materialistic, and in certain respects has gone from "the land of the free/home of the brave" to the next big commercial enterprise, you won't find an argument from me. As a fellow American, I'm not particularly proud of all aspects of this, but there isn't much I can really say...

I agree, Sazar. All this makes it difficult to cheer for some of the teams. :(

The whole principle of the Olympic Games has gone down the Swanny, to rampant commercialism, its a sad day indeed. :(

professional sports in america and the olympics is 2 very different things...

calgary lost to the tampa bay lightning... hardly a bought team... the main lads on the team have been together for a coupla years at least unlike some other teams...

If ya watched the games you would have seen where the puck was over the line giving Calgary the win its been shown all over we can clearly see the puck was in the net the Flames won the stanly cup , but that of course was overlooked because they are in Canada, and thats not new.

they are the best atheletes... you generally send the best your country has...

wrt the stanley cup... if you have a gripe... consider starting a new thread... you don't see me complaining about all the calls that went against tampa bay in every single round coz they weren't supposed to be there...

What 2 different things ... when you send your pro's I think its wrong no matter what country your from I think the pro's have no place there.

wrt basketball the US had a self-imposed amateur status but when they lost in 1988 they said look... the others send their best so we will send our best...

there some sports like Boxing where professional atheletes don't compete... all the boxers competing are amateur level...

wrt calgary... it has nothing to do with olympics... I raised the point about tampa coz to show I could also very well complain about officiating wrt the lightning as well... but this is not the thread to do it in...

If I am wrong then why are you waiting for the day? I mean if they allow pro's then all pro's should be there no?

Its wrong the pro's have there showcase. They have all the money and the contracts. Why cant the young up and coming get their chance to shine without having to compete against $$$ because thats the only reason the pro's are there so more $$$ is made by sponsers and TV channels.

Like I said if we allow pro soccer players lets say then why have a world cup every 4 years might as well get rid of that, why bother having world championship hockey , just send the pro's to the winter games, see what I mean? Its the countrys with all the pro's that gaIn from this not you or me.

Your only hope for a medal would be a pro baseball team .. too bad all those players would play for the US team because the almighty US of $ would give them all US passports lolol

Yes but why is it that only some sports have PRO's ? Thats the whole problem there should be no pro's at all.

And the places that think their PRO team is better by all logic should have a great young team. Only makes sence think about it.

different events have different limitations and are regulated differently... each sports governing body sets the rules pertaining to the olympics with the IOC and we progress from there...

most of the atheletes @ the olympics ARE professionals mainly because they need to earn money somehow if they are to dedicate their lives to a particular sport...

the point I raised in this thread is that the endorsement companies are getting too big a hand in the selection of teams apparently and that the media is hyping up certain atheletes more than needed...

were there to be no professional atheletes in the olympics at all we would have a mediocre and ultimately fading event...

as it stands today I am a big fan of the olympics... watching the synchronized mens diving today (as painful as it is to say that anything synchronized is a sport... whats next? synchronized long jumping?) and greece winning over vaunted favs in china/russia and the united states shows that surprises do occur :) and pleasant ones too...

the football regulations allow only a couple of professional players and most of the team is under 23 years of age...

the way that sports has become today you just can't deny that professionals will compete... thats NOT the point of the thread though...

the point is the influence commercial interests have over teams that they have no role getting involved in...

michael phelps olympics are already a "failure" as much as marion jones was in sydney... not because he has failed to medal or bring the US some major attention in the swimming pool... but because he will not break spitz's record and that his gold dreams now stand @ 1 gold and 2 bronze...

I blame Carl Lewis for the athletics professionalism and Jimmy Hill for the amount of money Football players get.

and yes i agrre we need all the pro's..........
