Internet Slowness After Extended Usage

It seems like after an extended amount of time using the internet it progressively gets slower. After some investigating and using the netstat command, I find that a lot of sockets are in use and are either in TIME_WAIT or are LISTENING or open for no apparent reason. Is there any program or method that will clear this sockets and make them available for use again.

I find also that after maybe 3 or 4 days I will get No Socket Errors. A reboot, and a reconnection to the Internet will fix this problem but I'm thinking there might be a program out there to alleviate this problem. I'm just wondering how some people have ridiculous uptimes and not run into this issue.

i'm no expert, but i would look at 2 possibilities:

1) try turning off services that aren't needed

2) run a viruscan on your system a.s.a.p. (i experienced a general system slowdown, ran a scan and came up with 5 instances of the nimbda virus)

3) if nothing else works, i'd consider formatting and starting clean - there's nothing quite like an enima for your pc!

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
