How many run servers?

Do you own and run a server online?

psshh.. Means I'm better off leaving by using my router and leaving my machines on if I only wanted a file server.
I 'was' thinking about reducing disk space consumption by having everything on the server, and the client just running apps off the server itself.
It's doable on a home network probably you just need more network knowhow ... I think you would need to set up a domain an such.

-edit- you would also need "server" versions of all apps you wanted to run from your server.

Right! That's it.. I sux on this topic. Only gona go for file/game server... if I get a chance. :p

pretty much a "thin client" style system you are thinking of doing

ming: The setup that you describe with remotely located programs is most often referred to as a KeyServer. One centralized server where client machines can access programs. Quite a few universities use this setup, since the program only needs to be updated from one location.

If you wanted to setup something similar on a local network you could just use a fileshare on the server machine and install your programs from your client to that shared resource location.

As mentioned before, you can probably setup something similar using NT administration tools, but I would imagine that would be a pain in the bum.

If you wanted the full featured KeyServer style secure platform, there are some commercial programs that do this:

Thanx Albybum, I'll take a look at the once I've finished my assignment for Uni.

I have an xbox here that runs Gentoox and it does

Apache2/MySQL/PHP/FTP/Samba/Webmin/Webcam/Game Server & more I can't think of right now.

for windows newbie who want to have a webserver/mysql+php i would recommend EasyPHP.. you can't get easier installation in my opinion.

i run a lan Apache-AdvancedExtranetServer 2.0.48 /mod_perl/1.99_11 Perl/v5.8.3 mod_ssl/2.0.48 OpenSSL/0.9.7c PHP/4.3.4.. still trying to make Postgresql running.. for internal developement at home

running lan EasyPHP bundle (Apache2/MySQL/PHP) + both lan & private Serv-U FTPD at work for softwares updates and for friends since i'm stuck on dialup at home

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
