I am thinking about upgrading my graphics card, but I was wondering if it would be worth it with my old cpu. I can't afford to get a whole new system at this time. My main goal is to be able to play HL2 and CSS at 1280x1024 at a halfway decent frame rate. If I do get one it will probably be something midgrade like a 9800 pro or X700. So what do you think? Waste? Any suggestions?

    specs:
    Athlon 1800xp
    768 megs Ram
    Radeon 9500 Pro
    4x agp

What can you afford? or can you hold off until you could afford a cpu/mobo/ram bundle?

Yep, I'd suggest hold off and get a new machine.
CSS is kinda laggy even on my machine, but I have a crappy gfx card compared to most other machines out there.

I had a 9500 PRO and upgraded to the 9800 PRO. It is definitely faster but at 1280x1024 it is going to be a disappointment. Hold off.
