MICROSOFT HAS ISSUED A KNOWLEDGE BASE ARTICLE ON THIS VERY TOPIC.

If MS releases it then it surely must be legal to do so on here:
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q328874

    Have a read.

The original thread was here but one of the mods thought it was illegal... :p

Anyway I guess MS realized, if you can't beat them, why not join them!

We posted this article about 5 months ago... we only removed the links on these forums if they also had a link to the tool you could use to change this key.

no-one using the forums should need to change there key, its only for legitimate cororations who bought volume lisenced versions of WindowsXP.

And we all use Store bought or OEM copies here right ? :D :D :p :p

    help please

I had a computer built by a local computer store and they gave me what I think is the Corp. version of XP Pro that doesn't need to be activated. I realized that I didn't have a legit version when I tried to install SP1 and it didn't work. Since they tried to pull a fast one on me, I had them get me a full version of XP Pro. I checked Microsoft's article on changing the key, but I don't have the registry key that it points me to (WPAEvents). So is there anything I can do to enter my valid key and activate Windows? I don't want to have to reinstall the OS cause I've already done a bunch of tweaks and registry changes and whatnot. So any help that can keep me from having to do that would be appreciated.
