DVD R/W just disappeared!

OK now who can explain this - today I boot up and the DVD drive is there fine? SO sometimes it disappears, others it is there?

Anyone experienced this intermittent unuseability of an optical drive? I am truly at a loss right now.... But kind of happy it came back.... yet unsure if I can rely on it staying useable there....

[EDIT] and a few hour later I have to restart system again, and it has gone again.... only possible complication was freezing on shutdown (Device Driver?) so that I had to hit restart button.... tempted to just try another restart and see if it comes back.... [/EDIT]

Anyway you could e-mail me the Local Machine/System/Current control set of your registry?

navigate to it and highlite the "current Control Set" of your registry and right click, choose export, then save as whatever, put into a zip folder and send to.

It's at least worth a look.

sent - thanks for looking.... (I guess I could have editted extention and posted as attachment here also?) Anyway - emailed it now....

Here is your problem.

I am still looking to find WHY it decided to have two instances of your DVD player, one as a CD-ROM and one as a Disk. One possibility is you have a driver that is loading that allows use as a DVD-RAM and the driver is causing the drive to be seen as a removable storage that is empty.

Don't remove this yet, reboot till it is not seen as a CD-ROM and go to

Start-->Control Panel--Performance and Maint.-->System-->Hardware-->Device Manager

See if you can find where it is located, what it is listed as. Then go to.
Right Click device, Properties-->Driver tab--> Driver Details

Please list all the drivers that you find.

Thanks

drivers

Bang on! Top bombing as EP would say...

The attachment shows the drivers - looks like GEAR thingummy is maybe the culprit - wherever that comes from..... (I'll investigate)....

Nice to think I might get to fix this! :)

The gear belongs to a DVD burning software. And this is for your Sony CD-R is it having problems?

I was thinking that your NEC DVD player was the one disappearing.

Anyway, whatever one is disappearing, re-boot till it is no longer shown as a DVD-ROM or CD-ROM then go in to device management and try to find what it has been classified as. It *might * be shown as a disk drive as opposed to a CD-DVD device. Then find the drivers.

My computer screenie

yeah it is the DVD and only the NEC DVD I have trouble with.

After a quick google I found GEAR was legit for the CD also.

So the screenie you saw is for the drivers shown for the DVD - when it is recognised correctly (see attached my computer screenie). I am guessing I need to uninstall the CD ones for the DVD here?

I hope the attached is the last thing you need to see problem specifically and solution - hopefully I am in a position to rep you if this works out as a final resolution.

I want you to re-boot till the NEC DVD drive is seen as the removeable storage and then post the screens shot like you did for the sony a few posts above. Where it lists all the drivers.

I want to know what is loading.

right - will try after I log out of all my telnets and sh*t... might be tomorrow depending how stuff goes...

[EDIT] OK - first reboot down - and guess what, DVD drive is good! I think there could be a bit of Murphys or Schroedingers or something here - might be a while (if ever) before we see the problem again ;) .... But as and when I will capture and post.... [/EDIT]

Finally went bad!

After a considerable number of reboots coming up OK, the DVD drive (NEC, and incidentally earlier screenie was also NEC, but when it was functioning correctly) has finally shown up as removeable storage (making it unuseable).

It is under disc drives in Dev Mgr and here is the screenie I get from listing the driver details.... Hopefully this means we can be certain the exact and correct changes to fix the problem so it does not come back on me!

After much beer drinking and vacationing I have thought of no reason that XP would try to use this drive with the drivers that are loading as a hard disk. My guesstamate would be that the decision on what it loaded as each re-boot would be determined by what part of the registry was loaded and initialised first. So my reccomendation would be to go to this subfolder of the registry

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet

All three, Current control set one, two and the active set and take ownership, or be signed in as the named administrator, and navigate to the

\Enum\IDE\

subset and delete all instances of

Disk_NEC_DVD_RW_ND-3500AG___________________2.16____]

from the registry.

Before you do so I would reccomend setting a system restore point and exporting the whole current registry to a known loacation as a back up, just in case.

IN case you are wondering the "ClassGUID"="{4D36e967" With the 967 is the identifier tag as I know it for all disk type devices. Class identifier for CD-ROM etc is 965.

Let me know.

Usually, when my CD or DVD disappears, it's just a loose cable. I went back to a ribbon cable as some of those round cable's connectors are crap.

version 2.18 is out btw, time to update
Unless it really fixes something your having a problem with I find it a good idea to hold off on flashing drives.

Yeah but somethings you don't need to update regularly if they are working. I think CD/DVD drives are one of those. You can make them just about useless with and "update" when they worked fine beforehand.

no go as yet

OK - I have finally gotten around to trying, both from my admin account and from Administrator, in both cases deletion fails with a "red X" dialog box. I am trying a few variations, including trying to uninstall the drive in order to maybe get to delete these, but it looks as if I cannot right now delete those entries. Maybe there is a registry editting tool or maybe I could try regscrub and the like and see if that tidies it up itself.

In any case, stumped for now....

You will then need to take ownership of the registry.

Follow what I wrote and view the attachment, if you have any questions I can provide a detailed summary of how to take ownership. But I am at work and eating lunch now.....

OK , took ownership and delted - but now just have to see if all is OK and if problem ever recurrs. Thanks, I will try and remember to post either way.

Hate to say this - but rebooting today and problem comes back, along with the registry entries I deleted.... Any more ideas?

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
