Recently my DVD Drive (LG 8120b) has really been heating discs up whilst reading them. This has got to the point that they can be uncomfortable to hold (or amusing if applied to someone else :) ) after a 45 minute divx movie.

I'm assuming this is bad, but does anyone know what this is or why?

I would check your internal temps, (case, cpu, hard drive, sounds like the system is running hot.) but I have heard of dvd/cd players doing that

nope.

cd rw is fine, case temps are acceptable and the cpu is chillin'

it's just that dvd drive :(

you sure it's only been doing that recently? that would be odd if it didn't use to do that.

if i'm ever going to access files off of a cd/dvd (music, movie, etc), i copy them to teh hd, first... so the optical drive isn't spinning the whole time. prevents wear and tear.

My DVD did that too (Pioneer DVD-114). One day I could smell that burnt electronics smell that everyone fears, so I replaced it with a LiteOn drive and had no problems since. The old one was a 2 years old I think, started making discs very hot after about 18 months.

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
