Hey guys,
I've began working with Debian as my shell so that I could learn linux a little bit better. I've gotten it to the point where I've learned a few small things, how to edit files and things of that nature. I've gotten some things working with the help of others, like awstats. I'm trying to install other programs from packages.debian.org, and I can download them fine and they'll extract, but when it comes to actually utilizing them I'm flat out lost.
One of the things I've downloaded was called the achims-guestbook. I don't have the faintest idea as to where I should place some files or what I should do in order to make it work. I ran perl /usr/sbin/install-achims-guestbook. I can never find any documentation that basically says, first you do this. Then this, then that. Instead, I do the install and immediately I just feel like I'm in the middle of a lake without a paddle. I have no idea where to continue on from there or how to get it using.
I guess first things first, do you guys have any advice for being able to install programs such as the achims-guestbook? I'm trying to find programs that I may get some slight use out of and would be good to learn further how to use debian by installing them. If someone is using debian, would you mind being able to tell me how to get started and what I need to do with achims? Maybe I won't feel so "in the middle" of the installation.
Any tips and recommendations would be great. Also, recommendations on various programs I should try to install, and perhaps instructions on how to do that would be great.
