Computer crashes when I try to dial.

Ok guys I'm working on a computer for my grandma so that I can get her on the internet.

Here's my problem.

It's an old IBM PC that I bought used. The modem I have is labeled an HPS56 Micromodem. When I try to dial out my computer just completely locks up. The screen goes black and it has a weird color design. I'll try to take a picture of it. Can anyone help me out with this problem?
