Best Anti Virus.

I also uses Norton 2002 and once it's installed correctly it's fine; for finding viruses, viruses are now not the threat they were a few years ago. (Let's not mention what happens when you have to un-install it and re-install it again).

Intrusions into your machine via even slow internet connections using scripting languages like VB are now much more viable to hackers as they can't be detected with a virus footprint.

There are even commercial programmes that act in the same way as viruses did three years ago in order to pass information back to the host. Many (free) programmes that downloaded stuff (Music, porn, illegal software) ect, contained these elements that the company would sell on to other companies. Certain Governments do the same. This type of intrusion can't be detected or stopped as it's has passed into common use.

Even if you have a Firewall installed most are easly circumnavigated.

Generally speaking Norton will stop you from being infected with a "KNOWN" virus and some trojan horses, but it's a daily battle that you will in the end loose (if you are under attack). Anyway some modern viruses are benificial and perform tasks that help you, just because you have not heard of them does not mean they don't exist.

For most peoples use, Norton 2002 and ZONE LABS (not professional) port chaser will do just fine however if you are a terrorist or similar they won't help in the slightest.

The major dammage in recent years to the internet communities ability to communicate was not undertaken by viruses but by stupid programmers using Visual Basic and Internet Utilities readly available, that were (retrospectivly) trapped as bugs in the various enviroments they ran in (and not just Iternet Explorer).

The truth is that if I write a small programme now and can find a way of sending it to every Interner user when they next log-on, all computers in the word will become infected, no virus checker can possibly be of any use, no firewall will stop the transfer as it's already registered as secure.

This might sound impossible. It's not because just about all computers in the word use one of three operating systems.

If you wan't total secutiy use variable expressions of "one time pads", IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT "ONE-TIME-PADS" ARE you will never be able to secure any information or prevent others form obtaining it.

AVG Anti-Virus 6

I've just recently started using the free edition of AVG anti virus 6.0 (available at www.grisoft.com ), and I'm perfectly happy with it so far - it doesn't seem to slow things down too much, and seems to be very unobtrusive.

However... there is one problem; the cynic in me wonders how / why this is free software! Unless I've missed something in the small print, this doesn't seem to be a time-limited trial, and the updates to the 'virus database' are free and unlimited.

Does anyone have an explanation for why this software is free, whereas so many others mentioned in this thread are not (Norton, PC-cillin etc..)? I'm just hoping there's nothing dodgy going on behind the scenes - spyware etc..

It would set my mind at rest to be told that I was just being too cynical for my own good!!

PS. I read somewhere else that AVG was about to be discontinued - is this true?

PPS. If anyone cares to recommend alternatives, I'm only really interested in free AV programmes available online as I'm on a tight budget!! (ie. I'm tight when it comes to paying for software!!)

cheers,

This is a good point. Developing modern Anti-Virus softwate is an expensive and interactive project requiring teams of programmers that don't come cheap. Dr. Solomans Anti-Virus Toolkit (anyone remember) once gave an in-depth insight into this problem. However most viruses are written using easly available"virus engine" toolkits, or developed by students at Univeristy as a way of enhancing thier street credibility.

I would 'steer' clear of any "FREE" antivurus programme that's not been developed by known companies. This market is dying anyway as more modern ways of doing the same ting which are much more difficult to detect are born, and at a fraction of the development cost. You have Microsoft to thank for this as they continue to encourage "Visual Basic for evertything".

This is one question that will never go away.

Personally, I prefer NAV. I have been using Norton programs since their early years and have never encountered any problems.

Obviously, it just depends on your needs and what you output.

Thanks for that - I think I'll keep using AVG for the time-being. The price is right!

NAVNT or Corporate Edition is also nice, MAIN box downloads updates etc and sends them down to the workstations, also performs schedueled scans and tracking.

Personnal I use NAV2002 KaZaA-Network Edition at home.
