AVI/MPG lagging problems

can anyone help i have some AVI and MPG files on my pc (windows xp pro) the problem is when i try to access them either view the properties of the file or just click the file folder it laggs my pc
i know there is a line in the regedit u delete to stop this problem however i had to format and have lost everything

is it taking up all your resources making it run horrendously slow? just a shot in the dark, but what are your system specs?
