it's relatively common knowledge that harddrives should share channels with other harddrives, as opposed to optical drives (dvd, cd) and vise-versa. well if one has an ata66 hd and ata66 dvdrom on the same channel, all should be well, right? it's based on interface speed rather than drive type, correct?

The reason hdd:s and cd/dvd:s should not share the same cable is that they rarely have the same interface speed. But it's a thumb rule, not a law. :)
