Can someone spend a mo explaining ASPI to me?
I see that there is an ASPI available for use with CD burning
on the downloads page. It suggests that I might need this. Do I?
Are they absolutely essential or just fancy add-ons!

it's not essential if your stuff already works fine, but if you plan on ripping cd's and the like your most likely gonna need it, it's nothing fancy it's just a driver :)
