can anyone tell me what this file is and what it does ?
it keeps popping up my norton firewall not sure if I should
let it go or block it

Check out this link - about halfway down the page there is a "Black Vipers Windows XP Services Configuration" table that lists Application Layer Gateway Source (alg.exe) Click on the read more info!
