Throw in $200.00 for me to screw it togeather, plug it in and install our junk.

Most of the parts already have a 3yr warranty, That is better than Hell, scuse me Dell. I wish the junk I was puttin on it was linux compatable, but it isn't so wonderus winders it is.

Personally, with a dBase server I would not recommend going solely raid 0. Raid 0 + 1 is really your best option (unless one could afford a software controlled net appliance type device). That would be too expensive though.

And yes saz, for dBase operations, there's an issue of both speed, though I have no idea how many users will be hitting this dBase at a time, or it's ultimate size (in terms of numbers of records/size).

I'm gathering by your mention of this setup you probably already know, and this is more a setup issue, but of course keep the indexes and tables on seperate HDs, so one isn't competing for heads to look at both the index and the data it points too...

If RAID 0 is done solely (which gives no redundency in case of disk failure) and depending on the importance of this data...I would be very explicit in the need for a very good backup/recovery procedure. Perhaps even taking hot backups or something more then once a day (such as during lunch break as well as after peeps have gone home).

Another possibility, depending on how many servers they need is to do something with archive logging, and throw the second server into permanent recovery mode. This then serves as a backup server (reading the archive log additions, and adding it to it's copy of the dBase). They might need it for something else however. Now if a failure happens on the first dBase, then taking the backup server outa recovery mode, and changing the DNS to point to the backup server's IP address could give a relatively quick means to get back online. Depending on your needs, this might not be a feasible option however...

If I were responsible for the companies databases, I wouldn't want to rely solely on raid 0 (without some redundency to protect the companies data, as well as my career should a drive failure prove a monumental disaster for their business); albeit that's me.

I'd go for RAID 5 instead of RAID 0+1. Shouldn't be too expensive.

I thought of tape, even priced a 40Gb Travan, but for the cost I could buy 2 of the Maxtor One Touch external Hdd's and not have the expensive tapes to change, store, slow updates etc....

Raid 5 was a thought, but the expense was again too much, and the resync still takes time.

100Gb for the C: and all the associated crap. 200Gb D: for the D/B's, and 300 Gb for ghost images from other PC's to backup on to the server, then to the One Touch, and that will be stored off site. Updated as I see the need to, 1-2 weeks. The smaller footprind of only having clients on all the rest of the important PC's will make a network backup a breeze. Then the DB's 2 are dynamic and highly important, the rest can be re-installed.

RAID 5 has it's performance dis-advantages wrt dBase servers. Performance really can be an issue with a heavy volume dBase, and the time it takes to do the parity stripping...

BTW, with 100 GB on the c: drive, what server software is this using? If Oracle, I hope all the table spaces and what not won't be lobbed in the system table space...

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
