I currently upgraded my PC from an 1800+ to a 2500+. I am using as of right now a Volcano 9 and am having temp problems. The chip runs idle around 45 and max's out around 52 - 53 under a full load.

Im looking for a new cooling solution, somthing that will keep the chip cooler and also allow me to overclock my 2500+. I understand that if i do overclock the chip will run hot, but i don't know how hot the Barton core is suppose to get.

I recently started reading about the Zalman heatsink and have heard mixed reviews about how well it cools. Any help on my current situation would be great. Thank you.

I told you I didnI told you I didn't think I put the AC3 on there right and I'm gonna redo it when we get home!

clean off the bottom of the heatsink and the core of the barton, then make sure you apply some good thermal compound. that would reduce temps if you didn't already do it. (die size changed, so therefore thermal area would have to change) Volcano 9 should keep things a little cooler than that. try bumping up the fan speeds on the volcano 9

lol

yeah, the 2500+ supposed to run pretty cool... probably close to the same temp as your 1800+, depending on what core it was. let krux give it another try. if the as3 application and heatsink installation isn't done perfectly, you could have a large difference in temperature.

I have that heatsink and it is a tremendous improvement over my volcano 7 :)

and it is so much quieter as well...

the barton core runs cooler than the pally and t' bred A/B cpu's...

the cooling is excellent... and I am telling you this from first hand info :)

installation is a bit tricky since the fan sits separate from the heatsink but the finish is quite top notch and like i said... the thing is SILENT in silent mode and just a little louder in normal mode :)

don't say its tricky sazar.... man hes gonna make me install it!!

:)

its not really that big a deal but the arm that hold the fan spans at least 1 agp and 2 pci slot :) .. .thats at LEAST :)

but other than that it is not much harder to install than a regular HSF :)

heck if I can do it... anyone can do it

Alright thanks...apparently my Shim was warped...now i got it running with the Volcano 9 around 109 under full load. But now I want to overclock. Would the Zalman be a good overclocking HSF Sazar or no ?

I presonally do not recommend oc'ing :)

but if you run the zalman fan @ normal instead of quiet setting (faster fan) it will be a decent overclocker I think... it dissipates a huge amount of heat :)

i think he's just personally against the idea of overclocking... but says if you want to OC, that heatsink should be decent.

well sorta true :)

I will never say don't overclock... the idea of overclocking is fine... but I am not an advocate for overclocking and I am beyond the stage where I think it is kewl to overclock for the heck of it :) I do oc from time to time personally but I Will never recommend it to anyone else... since their machine is out of my realm of checks and balances used when oc'ing :) ... I hope you see my point...

if you must overclock... the zalman will do the job fine... as I stated... just make sure you run the fan in NORMAL mode instead of in QUIET mode to get maximum cooling :)

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
