Hi guys
Is there a way to get an xvid movie to work on a pc if the user has no administrative rights to install, or modify the registry?

thanks

If the user has no admin rights, they will not be able to install anything. So I guess the answer to your question is no ...

ok.

i was hoping there was a portable solution. just as there is with firefox portable (standalone, no need for registry, or install files.

i found something..
VLC Media Player!!

Yeah, VLC is the greatest thing ever for video. It plays just about everything I throw at it. :)

I don't care for vlc for some reason .. I like the k-lite codec pack with media player classic better. That will play anything as well..

Same with Winamp :)

Winamp has to much a grumbling, and static noise when I listen to it. It drives me crazy.

there is nothing good about codec packs. best thing is ffdshow, media player classic and dscaler. vlc as backup.

mpc can play most formats, like vlc, without installation.eg for xvid, just put the xvid.dll in mpc's folder

MPC still needs codecs to play video files, and ffdshow comes with most codec packs...

MPC still needs codecs to play video files
technically only the dll, so no installation is needed

ffdshow comes with most codec packs...
ffdshow is not a codec pack, nore does it come with any codec packs. its an excellent versatile dshow(and vfw) playback filter that happens to support almost all formats one would encounter, aside from rm and qt, which is solved through installing qt and real alternative

ffdshow does come included in some codec packs, such as the Klite codec pack. Go to the site and educate yourself.

i apologize, we've had some bad communication-- post #10 can be interpreted as "ffdshow is included with some codec packs" or "ffdshow installation includes codec packs".

take a look at the list of (mostly) crap k-lite installs

ffdshow can decode all of the following single-handedly, and installing all the ones below is so redundant its not even funny:

XviD [version 1.1.0]
- DivX Pro [version 5.2.1]
- 3ivX Pro [version D4 4.5.1]
- CoreAVC [version 0.0.0.4]

- FLAC (illiminable) [version 0.69.8924]
- Voxware MetaSound [version 1.0.0.12]
- AAC encoder (3ivX Pro) [version D4 4.5.1]

its vfw interface can allow encoding of all the following:
XviD [version 1.1.0]
- DivX Pro [version 6.1.1]
- 3ivX Pro [version D4 4.5.1]
- x264 [rev. 424]
- On2 VP3 [version 3.2.6.1 DT]
- On2 VP6 [version 6.4.2.0] [Encoding]
- On2 VP7 [version 7.0.9.0] [Encoding]

- MS MPEG-4 [version 4.1.0.3927]

most of these do the same job, and vlc and mpc have built-in splitters anyway. it comes with mpc.

MP4 splitter (Haali Media Splitter) [build 2006-01-29]
- Matroska splitter (Haali Media Splitter) [build 2006-01-29]
- Ogg splitter (Haali Media Splitter) [build 2006-01-29]
- Ogg splitter (OggDS) [version 0.9.9.5] and Ogg Vorbis DLLs [aoTuVb 4.51]
- MPEG demuxer (Elecard) [version 1.0.31.51211]
- MPEG demuxer (Gabest) [version 1.0.0.1]
- MPEG demuxer (Ligos) [version 4.0.0.77]

the codec pack, like most, is put together sloppily and so many filters may result in conflicts which aren't pretty. also, who the hell encodes on2 or intel indeo anymore? name one person that encodes divx, xvid, 3vix, x264, indeo intel, huffyuv, all the time; most people stick to one or two formats, and anybody experienced enough to actually know how to encode all those formats should know not to install crap like this

Well, I do quite a bit of encoding for video composting and editing. And I do use Indeo quite a bit since it works on almost any modern system without having to install any third-party codecs. Also, its a pretty good codec quality wise, sure Xvid, divx... and well lots of others are better... but its a good legacy codec to use.

I will agree that the Klite pack is poorly put together, however it is a good one stop solution for some users.

I been using k-lite codec pack for a while now; I never had a problem with it conflicting. I once thought that it would, then, earlier versions did, but the newer ones don't give any probs ..

I like to use it, mostly for the fact that media player classic isn't nearly a resource hog as wmp. And it runs better ... Also, k-lite gives you the option to install what you want. So if you don't want something, just don't put a check by it.

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
