XP Running Really Slow! Please Help!

Recently my computer has started to run extermely slow. I degfragged my HD and did the usual maintenance, uninstalling programs I wasn't using, and it didn't help. Doing simple tasks has the processor up at as much as 100%, CP usage when idle is from 8 to 26%.

I have an Athlon 1.4Ghz and 512 MB RAm so I know its not my copmuter. Any tweaks or ideas would be of great help.

First thing I'd do is run a full virus scan and check for sypware (ad-aware from www.lavasoftusa.com).

what processes are running in your task manager?

how big is your harddrive and how much free space do you have left? and what is the speed of your harddrive?

my friend had a similar problem, his new system ground to a halt. Turned out scvhost was using 75% cpu, he just did a system restore and it was all better.
