My mates son has just tried to install some software onto his new PC.

After a reboot he got a message that went something like "the registry is corrupt and does not match current configuration" and now he has no CD drive.

In device manager the CD drive has a yellow exclamation mark.

We have uninstalled the device - switched off - disconnected the drive -rebooted-switched off - connected drive- rebooted and xp says found new hardware identifies the drive etc but says there is a problem with the hardware and it didn't install properly - yellow exclamation mark is back.

Have tried this with a different cd drive with the same result.

The bios finds the drive okay.

Does anyone have any ideas short of trashing the thing and starting again.

Did you try a system restore yet? Restoring it prior to the installation of the problematic software will probably fix it.

Yes tried three different restore points - including the one prior to the installation of the software and also earlier system checkpoints - all three failed.

As an aside - I have never had a system restore work on any machine.

What was the sofware that was installed to cause the problem?

Maybe check for a virus.

i had the same problem!
i borrowed a CDRW from a friend and used as burning software WinOnCD; both the CD and CDRW were working fine!!!
after i uninstalled winoncd, the XP didn't want to see the CD; and I tried everything , and in the end i reinstalled XP...

(the CD was visible by the BIOS)

and yes, System Restore doesn't work for me either; never!

That's why I asked what the software was that got installed. It is a well know issue. Glad you got it sorted. :)

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
