XP Hangs?

My fresh installation of XP is hanging a lot. It takes forever to boot up and seems to take forever to even get logged in. Every program seems to hang a little bit as well. It feels like my whole computer is dying.

System Specs:
Amd Athlon XP 1600+
Asus A7V266-E
Leadtek Geforce4 Ti4400
2x256mb PNY Memory
Soundblaster Live! Gamer
Linksys NC100 Nic
Western Digital 10gig 7200 RPM HD
Western Digital 20gig 7200 RPM HD

There is also a griding noise when I start my computer. I can't tell if it's coming from my hd or not. Can anyone help me?

Well when you say it hangs it's really hard to diagnose...A grinding noise is not a good sign at all. If I was you i'd take my case off and try and determine the origin

Have you gone to the administrative tools in your control panel opened up the event viewer and seen if any critical events have happened?

Don't know about the grinding noise but see how this goes for the hang.

Correcting System Hang at Startup

If your system hangs about 2 or 3 minutes at startup, where you can't access the Start button or the Taskbar, it may be due to one specific service (Background Intelligent Transfer) running in the background. Microsoft put out a patch for this but
it didn't work for me. Here's what you do:

1. Go to the control panel/admin tools/.
2. Go to the 'Services' tab, find the 'Background Intelligent Transfer' service, disable it, apply the changes & reboot.




Also if not on a network disable 'workstation' at the same place as above.

It doesn't hang for 2 or 3 minutes really. It just seems to run like my P3600 does instead of 1.4 ghz like it should. I haven't changed anything from my original system that I built over a year ago that's been running stable and quick as greased lightning. Then it just started to run like crap so I formatted and reinstalled XP. I don't really know how to describe the "hang" but it's more of a hesitation it seems like before commands are executed. It didn't do this when I first built the system. If no one has any ideas I guess I'll just deal with it.

sounds like your hdd is going bad. there are a number of apps to test it (googlize it), but i'd first recommend taking the side of the case off and putting your ear up to the hdd as it boots.

if it is your hdd making the sound, back up your data fast!
