XP hanging... chapter 412!

I'm so fed up.

I've got Windows XP on a AMD Athlon 2100+ system, (ATI Radeon 8500DV, Creative Audigy). It's a fab bit of kit, just wish it would work!

The problem is it hangs, constantly. It crashes at random frequently when playing video files, playing audio files, playing games, and hangs less frequently (but just as reliably) when I'm doing anything else! I've completely re-installed Windows, I've taken out the ATI & Creative drivers one at a time, and it still happens.

Do anyone have any ideas, or even better, surely theres a fellow sufferer?

.... check your running temps, it sounds like over heating to me, tell me what u see if it isnt that there are other things to check

Yeah, that was one of my first thoughts, it happened lots on my last PC. ASUS Probe results show processor is 57°C and motherboard is 31°C, both well under danger levels... and that with the machine on for a few hours.

Plus, the hanging can be induced very early from cold start up, so I guess thats out.

I'm in the process of going through all my drivers again, but if you've any other ideas, lemme know )

SpeedFan is my recommandation for Hardware monitoring .

Check out some BIOS settings ( AGP set to .. ) . And specify your motherboard also .

What about your HD and HD temp???
If the Hard Drive is getting too hot It may cause it to have probs.

BTW... Have you done all the latest XP updates/patches???

Guys, I've run all sorts of test on it, over night... (and it hasn't crashed once! But guess thats not much of a workload).

All temperatures are within standard parameters for the motherboard (an ASUS A7A266-E, with bios updated etc.), as are the voltage levels. I've run complete hardware diagnostics, with no problems.

It is a 300W power supply though, (someone said 400 needed?)...

It seems to be only when put under stress that the machine fails )(videos, mp3s, games, rendering) so I'm coming round to the idea that it's hardware not coping...

Now, anyone any ideas how to deal with technical support who can't think of a better response than "Insert your recovery CD and restart"?

hehe i dont know what is with these people and "you need 450watts" bla bla bla.....


i have a 2100+ , geforce 4 ti4600, 32x burner, two 80gig hard drives on raid 0, four 80mm high output case fans, a 70mm high cfg cpu fan, and all my USB componets that draw power though that... and guess what i run that all on 330watts.... heeh soo your probably ok with ur power supply....


... your you have your system overclocked? did u forget to up ur core voltage? this will cause the symptoms to only act up under loads

Oooh funny you should say that, it's not overclocked, but the core voltage was a bit on the low side!

But hang on, why would that make it crash just because I'm watchin' a video? I'm still confused...!
