XP Hang problems

When my system sits idle for more than a minute or two, I can't access anything. I double click a program on the desktop and get the hour glass for about 15 sec. and then nothing. I can't shutdown or reboot without hitting the reset button.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just some more info; as long as I have an apllication open (IE 6 or a game) it will work fine, but soon as I shutdown all programs for more than a minute, it hangs.

Guess I stumped everyone with this one. Well I figured it out with the help of SiSoft Sandra. Windows had installed 2 different drivers for my NIC and both were wrong. Obviously only one would work at a time but both were there.
