i've got to replace the motherboard on my wifes pc,not upgrading
any components just replacing the mobo.will i be able to use xp
thats already installed on the harddrive or am i gonna end up
having to buy another copy?

If you bought a copy for her computer already then you DON't need to buy another copy just because yuor changing parts... You might have to call MS for activation however...

Not might have to call MS you will have to call MS, I had this porblem when I replaced my MB, it only took 5mins

not necessarily true.. I just had my mobo changed 2 days ago and I didnt have to reinstall or call for activation. Of cours eit wouldnt boot right up, but I booted off of the cd and repaired. Then after about 4 tries at booting, it installed itself and kept all my old info.

no need to call MS

Copy WPA.DBL from the windows>system32 folder to a floppy, then once you have installed the new board and are up and running just replace this file - no reactivation needed.

By changing your mother board and NOT reinstalling you keep all of your old board driver... A situation I don't like...

I thought the WPA.DBL trick only worked when the hardware was identical...

i just finished putting everything back togather, spent maybe 5 min
reactivating xp and i'm pleased to say that all systems are go!
also solved my problem w printer sharing on my network.

once again,thanks to all;)

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
