work laptop + home network

I have a laptop with Windows 2000 Server installed that I bring to work everyday, and join a domain. I also have a home workgroup with a Windows XP Professional desktop machine. When I come home and want to use the laptop, I usually start it up just like I do at work. The work domain is specified, and I use the same login/password as my work account. I am not vpned but the login still works without seeing the work domain controller. Now at home on my desktop (XP Pro) box, I have a printer and file shares that I would like to access from the laptop. However, when I try to do a \\xpprobox I get the error below.

If I vpn into my work on the laptop, I am able use the shared printer on my home computer. Does anyone know if there is a way to access the resources without that hassle of vpning?

this MAY be due to that the xp box is not part of that domain, and the laptop is not apart of the workgroup the xp box is on... can you give the subnet mask of the laptop and pro box?

They are both 255.255.255.0

Any ideas? Joining the domain on the desktop is not an option.

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
