i am having problems with windows media player 9. i used to be able to open my mpegs with it but now i keep getting 'cannot play file, unsupported file type'. i had to install a new divx to play certain files but that hasn't been the problem in the past. i tried reinstalling wmp9 to no avail. could it be a codec problem?

Are you using the BETA version (Check build# in Help -> About Windows Media Player, the BETA versions have a build# prior to 2926)? Then it is time to update to the new build! Just choose Help -> Check For Player Updates in WMP9. In my case it was a big download (13 MB) though, so be prepared.
