WMP9 and .AVI files

I recently got some .avi files from my friend and i have been having lots of trouble getting them to open. I have tried WMP9, Power DVD XP, and DivX Player 5.0.2. I can get just sound with wmp and Pdvd and i get just video with the xVID plugin for Divx, but cannot get the both. I really dont understand because WMP is supposed to support .avi files, but if anyone knows anything that can help me, would be much appreciated. Also i have tried mpeg-4 codec's from www.mpegable.com and I do have the WMP9 XP bonus pack installed. PLEASE HELP

Download Gspot (no, I didn't make the name up). It will tell you what codecs you need for each file and if you have that codec installed.
