i want to setup a network in this house, its two stories, the computer that has the cable modem is upstairs, and the second computer is downstairs, pretty much across the house. is it possible to get a decent enough connection on the second computer? theres plenty of wall between them so i know that is a problem...any suggestions?

That is basically the set-up i have...
Any wireless router should work.
I recommend a Belkin, or linksys - Personally i do not recommend D-Link, or NetGear.

so even with all the blockage you still get a good connection? enough to maybe play games online? amd lastly could you recommend a router?

also - im looking at some routers, and some have their distance listed, would a larger distance be better, or do the walls negate that?

edit 2 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16833124010 i found this one looking on newegg, says it has upto 54mbps data rate, is this average or is there better?

Oh yeah.
I play games through it. And the dist is prolly 190feet through a floor and about 6 walls....
I was fine, and i had a budget Zyxel wireless card too. so...
54 is techinically above average - since b is still around but you'll find most things are g now.
But that seems like a good monitor, better than mine for sure, and i would get it if i felt i needed to waste the money.

If the signals weak at the gaming machine they have directional antennas with 2-3 foot cables for $5. With the cables you can set it up high on a shelf and improve the reception.

Make sure there is nothing like metal airducts, appliances, chimneys, or big mirrors between where you place the wireless router and the gaming machine. My house has a bathroom, laundry and furnace closet between the Mbdrm and office. I have to place the router to shoot the signal down a narrow hallway but I'm using crappy netgear and dlink equipment. The linksys should be much better than what I have.

I don't know how this would do at gaming as I don't play any online games but I have had the following for close to two years and have been very pleased with them so far.

I bought this a little later as I couldn't find it in stock anywhere when I bought the other stuff. It works just fine also.

They also have a "range extender" but I've never tried it (haven't needed it).

I have two computers "wired" to the router and two more wireless.

thanks for all the info, especially about the range extenders, and it seems link-sys is the way to go for a router..but what about the wireless network card for the pc? i think i currently have a d-link air something right now, and seeing from your posts, d-link isn't that great..

i myself have used linksys, netgear, avaya, xircom, and the like. for overall durability, survivability, and length of use, i have found the linksys to be a better overall product. try to match the card to the router - linksys card to linksys router. its not needed, but if you buy matching cards, you can get more speed from the router to the wireless card (example is wireless g with speedboost)

Yeah D-Link isnt good...
I would recommend a Linksys in that too.
Its not as important.
I would definately stay away from the belkin pre-n stuff.
Friend has it and its horrible for gaming.

alright ill shop around, ill be back if i have any problems, thanks guys

if you are that worried about it ..get a wireless n router with mimo. If the receiving computer is having a hard time with b, or g, then you could get a "n card" and your good for 1200 feet or so. Be sure to make it a secured network though if you intend on using any wireless solution.

hmmm now that brings up another question...whats the difference between the 802.11"x". it seems theres a b, g, 3, and a u?

edit2 - ok i found a card and a router with "n" technology + mimo.

CARD - http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=5131179
CARD2 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16833124093

ROUTER - http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=5131177

the only problem i see is if i go with that setup...it will cost about $200....

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
