wireless cards won't work

Sorry guys, but he's not been mislead. It is possible to connect two computers, both with Wireless Network cards without the use of an access point. This is done by puting the Wireless cards into ad-hoc mode. An Access Point is required when they are put in to Infrastructure mode.

Here's a link to a 'How To' page on Toms Hardware How To: LAN access for Wireless Clients without an Access Point

This goes a little bit further, in that it goes on to bridge the wireless network to a LAN, but the first part of the article is about joining two machines without an Access Point.

Well Kev, if your interested you can check this article,

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/expert/bowman_02april08.mspx,

It will explain that it is quite possible to have a home wireless network without a router. If I am understanding you correctly in this thread, then this is what you were trying to do, have a desktop computer connected to the internet via cable and have it broadcast a wireless signal to your laptop, in essance run the desktop as your Wireless Access Point. I'm not saying that this is the way you should do it, my experiences with Windows Internet Connetion Sharing have been less then spectacular, and I have never worked with it through wireless, but I don't believe you were mislead as it is apparently quite possible to achieve what you were trying to do.

ok thanks guys 2 comp now see each other just printer and internet to share any more excellent advice

If I'm reading this right, you still need to setup internet connection sharing in order to get internet connectivity on your laptop. Click on the link I posted above and there is a section on that page titled "Sharing the Connection", that goes through how to setup ICS. If both computers are seeing the Ad-Hoc network, then all you should need to do now is set the Desktop computer to give the laptop an internal IP, that section should explain how to do that. As for the printer, you'll need to share it out first, by right clicking on the printer you want to share, then select "sharing" and give it a name etc. then on the laptop you'll need to add a new printer and tell it to look for a network printer.
