hmm... that didn't really help out all that much, but i ran driver verifier, and it gave me another nifty error.
IO SYSTEM VERIFICATION ERROR in wmiinfo.sys
(WDM DRIVER ERROR 231) [wmiinfo.sys+28a2 at F88298A2]
that is what showed up after the computer restarted and driver verifier ran before booting into windows.
