I have just installed XP pro on main machine
It runs ICS sharing cable over the LAN

The LAN is on 10/100 switch and is connected fine.

From the Win98 client machine I can access internet and XP shares fine. Speed is reliable and fast, so no problem there.

But when I want to browse the network from XP its a different story.
Can see Win98 Machine fine.
When clicking on win98 machine from network places it takes a long time to show the shares on it. Up to 10minutes.
Sometimes crashes the network places.

What pisses me off is when connecting to Win98 ftp server on WinXP ftp client and downloading/uploading stuff, it works at good rates and speed is reliable.

Sorry I'm woffling but hey i want my network fixed.
Basically my question is:
Why is the Xp machines access times and speeds accessing the Win98 machine so slow via network places. Is there a common setting I need to change or add.

File sharing works but is just really slow from XP.

Any help very much appreciated.
TIA

How big is the directory being shared on Win98? WinXP uses a directory caching protocol that allows it to cache (or indexing as WinXP calls it) files for faster searches. If the area you are sharing on Win98 is big, WinXP has to sit there an index every file which could ultimately crash the computer. There are two fixes. Once, decrease the share size in Win98. Two, search the boards for a thread I posted on regarding slow network transfers. I gave a tutorial on how to turn networking caching off.
