I am trying to upgrade from WinME to WinXP, but get the following error message during installation:

"Failed to install assembly from manifest: "D:\I386\asms\6000\MSFT\WINDOWS\COMMON\CONTROLS\CONTROLS.MAN"; Win32 Error Code = 87
Installation Failed: D:\I386\asms. Error Message : The parameter is incorrect.
One of the components that Windows needs to continue setup could not be installed.
The parameter is incorrect.
GUI mode Setup has ended because of a fatal error."

System:
P3 600Mhz, Soundblaster Live, 3Com network card, Voodoo3 2000 AGP, 256mb RAM.

Thanks, all suggestions appreciated

Hi,

I seen this error message when a friend was installing the trial version of XP. The disc that he was using was starting to corrupt and we re-run the install using my copy and everything went ok.

Check your disc for any scratches or dirt and try giving the install another go. If that doesn't help either take your copy back to the shop or phone Microsoft and ask for a replacement disk.

Catch you later,
Blue

May be a blessing in disguise. It's rarely a good idea to upgrade from a dos based OS like ME to an ntfs based OS. It is preferable to just do a clean install of XP. I know it's a pain - but in the long run you'll be much happier.

Thanks for all responses. I have used the CD (original) a few times as I have had harddrive problems previously.

an asms error is usually due to cd drive losing contact with the cd during install. I would boot from a win98 startup disk, run smartdrv then xcopy the i386 folder to the hard drive and run setup from there.

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
