WindowsME problem

My friend turned off her PC the other day with out shutting it down. Now when she turns it on the PC just cycles screen savers and the mouse is always busy. The icon's do not load and i can't get to the start menu either. What would be the best way to get around this. I have tried safe mode and it just hangs also.

Startup with an ME boot disk and reinstall Windows ME. If there is no boot disk available, check here: http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm.

Well i just booted in safemod again and it asked to check disk. This last time it worked, and booted fine afterwards Thanks though
