windows update

I may have missed it...........when I scan for updates everything goes ok .........select download .....the download box just hangs........it says preparing for download.........tried restart .not been able to update for over 2 weeks........4widdy

A couple of things to try>

Windows Update - Error

If you cannot update XP check your c:\windows\windows update.log. If you have this error: Error 0x800C0008 then go to Tools\internet options\languages. You must have one language selected. Boom windows update works again!

Or for LAN settings

Go to control panel, open up Internet Options\Connections. Click on the Lan Settings button at the bottom right of the window. Untick Automatically detect settings.

I have the [windows update- - web page log] box
preparing to download...........................it just hangs there

Right click my computer/properties/automatic updates. Mine is unticked & update works OK.

Start / run / type in the box " services "

scroll down to Automatic Updates

this will need to be set to Automatic

if its not right click on it & choose properties

in the drop down box select Automatic

Apply
OK

nothing happens .......(enter does nothing)..........
right click my computer..........automatic updates section.......
message immediately under the buttons ........
"The Windows Update Service is unavailable"..........I cannot change anything in that window (as if the window is disabled) thanx for your help though I'll keep searching for an answer....4widdy

Does Windows Update hang on the installation of the most recent critical update?

Yes ......there were 2........ one can be downloaded elsewhere..but the vm java 5.1mb can only be downloaded from there .......4widdy
