I don't know what's up with windows update or the windows sp1 installer, but everytime i try to install sp1, i get this thing that cancels it. is there any way ican successfully download and install sp1?

The rest of the message isn't telling you to go legit is it? If so then that's it.

would help if u could show us more of it darklink =)

yep warez it is..... go buy a legit copy of xp and your problem is solved

ok heres what you do if you own a Legal copy of xp and have used the xp antispy program that was on the download page on this site,

Just reset the options in that program to normal from the menu
reboot the pc and then install XP sp1 , all should be fine now as the anyispy program blocks some thing in the SP to stop it installing,

If you have a Warez copy of XP then thats a different matter alltogether :D

wtf, i got my computer back in september of last year. a hp pavilion 7935, and it came preinstalled with windows xp. i didn't use any warex or anything.

and here's a new version of the pic:

must be something to do with the OEM winxp,

1. re-activate WINXP

2. if not, then check with HP about it!

Here is a good comprehensive tutorial what to do before installing SP1. I found it today in a Microsoft Newsgroup. Perhaps one of the points mentioned may be the reason why the installation fails.

Planning & preparation BEFORE you setup Service Pack 1.
See note below for owners of HP / Compaq pc's with the OEM Windows XP pre-installed.

Safety tips for any setup of operating system / or a service pack:
(a) run a CHKDSK to make sure file system is in good shape
(b) ** backup ** your current system,
(c) turn off antivirus & just about *every user-startup app program *
in MSCONFIG / Startup, with exception of Systray .

(d) Use Control Panel , drill down, and be sure to turn off any screensaver.

(e) Also if you have any program that changes the splash screen, or
provides more styles by modifying the system files (esp Styles-XP), uninstall it.

(f) If you ever installed XP-Antispy, it disables a dll XP-SP1 needs, so
just in case, Start - Run and type
regsvr32 licdll.dll <enter>
regsvr32 regwizc.dll <enter>

(g) make sure you have plenty of FREE space & run Disk Cleanup

(h) Use Windows Explorer. Go to C:\Windows\System32

If you have a sub-folder called * Catroot2 * (not Catroot) rename the
folder to CR2OLD. Better yet, delete all the contents of CATROOT2.

(i) logout / reboot bring up Windows (to get clean start & no files-in-use),
(j) now the pc is condition to start "setup" of Service Pack 1

Do read the tips and info on XP SP1
Windows XP Service Pack 1

<http://www.microsoft.com/WindowsXP/pro/downloads/servicepacks/sp1/default.asp>

The "express" is an on-line update, you do not really get to save a file for later.
The network install is the full file and that you can (a) download &
save, (b) run later for setup.

Note:
All owners of HP Pavillion / Compaq Presario computers running XP , and with the OEM / HP

/ Compaq version of XP.

See HP's announcement, and pls do check the HP support site.
HP developed a new patch named ** SP1RcvryFix.exe ** . This patch can be
installed before or after installing XP SP1 to correct the
incompatibility with the PC manufacturer's system recovery tool.

thankss yoyo! the XP-Antispy tip worked just fine 4 me :)

yoyo - the deal with the HP and Compaq **SP1RcvryFix.exe** - sounds like the answer to this thread

Thanks for the info - amazingly I just did a Windows Update check and the "fix" is not listed in windows update. The only thing in windows update is the warning/alert about having problems with System Recovery after SP1.

Thanks again yoyo!;)

true ..

when i clicked on the picture, i was like....... uhh why is that not downloading... ??

I've been having the same problem, and I've posted other threads but to no avail. I do have a legit OEM version, but it's not by Compaq or HP... but... but... could I possibly try using one of their fixes? Or will the fix not even install at all?

In case any one else has a problem installing Xp Service Pack 1, third party progs such Boot XP and Logon loader etc ,if installed on your system will prevent SP1 installer running.
they can be reinstalled after SP1 is loaded.
See support. microsoft.com knowledge base.

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
