Hi to you all. I'm new here and I'm hoping someone will be kind enough to help me with a problem I have. My daughter downloaded Windows Live Messenger a couple of weeks ago and it was working fine until a couple of days ago. She tried to sign in as usual but got an error message (80004005) I tried the troubleshooter and it said 'your proxy settings appear to be offline or proxy settings are invalid' I dont really have any idea what this means. Can someone advse please? Thank you.

Re: Windows Live messenger problems

That error usually indicates that your clock is a little off.

Check the time in your BIOS and in Windows to ensure they are set correctly. Once they are, syncrhonize your clock in windows with a Time Server. To do that, double-click on your clock in the bottom right corner of the screen, and go to the Internet Time tab. When there, ensure the box is checked to "Automatically Synchronize With an Internet Server" and then click "Update Now"

A Screenshot for your convenience -

Re: Windows Live messenger problems

Hi there and thank you for your reply. I have done as you asked, but i'm afraid it still does'nt work.. Any other ideas please? Thank you

Re: Windows Live messenger problems

Have you done any configuration changes, such as adding a New Anti-Virus or Firewall since you installed it?

Try turning off your Anti-Virus, not just disabling it. You need to find out the name of the .EXE that actually runs, go into Task Manager (CTRL + ALT + DEL) - hit task manager and end the process and then try again.

Re: Windows Live messenger problems

Ok. Tried all that but again I'm afraid nothing helped so far.. I have the firewall set to allow Live Messenger. It is strange that one minute it was working fine and then the next time it was'nt.. Thank for your time with this and if you have any further thoughts I would be very grateful. Do you think it could be what the troubleshooter is displaying about these proxy servers. I have no idea what they are and would appreciate some info if that's ok? many thanks.:)

Re: Windows Live messenger problems

Most People don't use any specific proxy server settings other than what is pushed by your ISP.

Within Internet Explorer, go to Tools, Internet Options.

Go to the Connections Tab

There is a button for LAN Settings on the Very bottom

Do you have a proxy server set in that screen?

Re: Windows Live messenger problems

The box that says 'use a proxy server for your LAN' is ticked but that's all that's there..

Re: Windows Live messenger problems

Untick the box, reboot your PC (shouldn't have to, but just to be safe) and try again.

Re: Windows Live messenger problems

I'm sorry to say that did'nt solve it.. what exactly does a LAN server do when activated. I know that it stands for local area network but I dont know what exactly it is. Any other thoughts please..

Hi there and sorry to trouble you again, but I have just run another trouble shoot on Messenger and this time, because I unchecked the LAN proxy box, the test results show no problems. Everything is ticked with a green tick now. So I attempted to sign in to messenger but no response again. This isbaffling!!

Not really sure what to say, if their troubleshooter doesn't present any problems I would try to un-install and then re-install.

I don't use the software myself, never have, but one thing I can recommend is after you un-install, go out to their website to ensure you get the latest build as well before you do a re-install.

EDIT: Sorry for not finding this earlier, they have a detailed blog post about this error -

Many thanks for this info. Unfortunately although I have gone to explorer and found the documents file I cant find the file they suggest I look for(her log in name etc to delete the cache) I hope I'm not being stupid here but is there any way you could help to find what I'm looking for. Thank you for your time.

Did you change your Explorer Settings so that you can see hidden files and folders?

Yes I've changed the explorer settings. I just cant seem to find the file they suggest.

I got to step D its the next files that I cant seem to locate..

Are you finding the folder, but not the "real" and "shadow" folders, or are you not even getting to

C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Windows logon name>\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Live Contacts\<Your Messenger email address>

I'm not getting to C:\Documents and Settings\<your Windows logon name etc.

Thank you for your patience....

At this point, I would try to un-install, reboot, visit the site to get the latest build and then re-install.

Ok. I'll try that. may I get back to you with my progress please? I'll wait to speak to my daughter before I do this just to let her know what's happening. So hopefully it will work for her and I'll get back to you as soon as I know anything .... many thanks to you.:)

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
