WIN 98 Crash

All of you have been very helpful in the past, and it is greatly appreciated....I bow at your genius once again, with a difficulty...
My secondary PC, PII/350, 96MB Ram, has performed flawlessly for almost 5 years. Yesterday, boot up to desktop, then hourglass and cursor disappears, hard disc activity ceases, and CRASH. Ran Norton Recovery, tells me everthing in all areas is OK, but does't fix problem. Ran in safe mode, and it boots all the way, mouse works, etc., but I can't identify problem in order to fix it. If it goes into safe mode OK then it could be a driver issue. Boot into safe mode & check the device manager. If you installed something recently try disabling it in there.
