I have 4 HD, and I want to remove one and add a SSD
(to load my games faster :laugh:)

how can I tell which HD is attached to which cable???
(without simply removing one at a time)

I do have the mapping from my partition program
1 = c
2 = f/g/h
3 = k
4 = o/p

thanks

I tend to write something like that down from the beginning.

There probably is a way to find out, but I can't seem to find that answer.

You could disconnect a hard drive one by one, boot up windows and see. If you unplugged the main (OS) drive, you will get errors. And if it's not the OS drive, once in windows you can see which one didn't show up.

yep - still cannot find a more 'elegant solution'

question - I am sure which one is C (based on location inside case)
if I unplug one of the other drives, then replug
what happens to the drive letters?
will they be recalled? or will winXP reassign
(and then screw up my registry keys???)

You could get a program like HDTune and go HD by HD and write down the serial/model numbers. Then look at the physical drives and choose the one you don't want. :)

wow - great solution !
only needed the free version
btw
3 hd less than 50C
main HD (c drive = 64C)
is that too hot??
********
fyi = i keep my case side off
and use a desk fan to blow on graphics card
(lots of 3d gaming)
I keep the fan off on non-game mode
just turned fan on - - and got 10 degree drop on all hd in 3 mins
hmmm. . . even as I write this - C drive went all way down to 45
************
fyi #2 - 20 mins later - all HD less than 40

Side note.

I am running HD Tune and when I click on the Health tab nothing happens. It's just a blank white page. Whats wrong?

works fine for me
I get about 15 readings per drive plus temp
winXP SP 1

The drive in question isn't in an enclosure or something is it?

No and Yes.

I have 3 drives. 2 internal drives. 1 External Drive (enclosure).

None of them are showing up in the health tab.

hmmm . . .
I did nothing special on install
and here is my health tab
(only options are to select what drive on the drop down on top)

I installed it on another one of my systems and it works 100%

For the health to work it uses SMART. Could my drives not have that? I thought all drives support that now.

I have 2 1TB Samsungs HD103UJ Drives, and 1 160GB Maxter One Touch 3 External

maybe a BIOS option??
ie SMART on/off?

(I am not much of a HD expert :crosseyed:)

As far as I can tell it's on.

I just installed SpeedFan, which does the same thing. And it seems to be working. Though it does not detect my external. Interesting.

Yeah, SMART doesn't work on externals/USB/Firewire drives. :) Not sure why it wasn't working on your internal ones though. Do you have them in RAID? (just throwing out guesses)

Nope.

How can SpeedFan work and not HD Tune. Yes HD Tune does a bit more but still.

SMART can work on externals if the enclosure chipset supports it (but very few do)

Either way dreamliner, the question is why ain't my internal ones working with HD Tune.

Anyone?

SpeedFan does SMART testing, but not as great as HD Tune, I really want it to work. I can't figure out why it wouldn't.

A quick guess could be that maybe HD Tune isn't 100% compatible with your chipset?

I have contacted HD Tune, don't know when or if they will reply.

That is probably what it is, most likely, which mean's probably no solution. :(

Are there any other programs as good, similar to HD Tune? As I said SpeedFan is more for CPU stuff. I know of HDDScan, but any recommendations?

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
