You don't see mini's that have been in accidents. All that is left is a paint smudge on the SUV's bumper.
Neither vehicle will be survivable in an accident. Not enough metal and mass to absorb the energy. Get the one with the most airbags (front, side, rear?). (I just got rear ended at a stop light. Essentially no damage to me or my 24 mpg city, Buick Lesabre. Pre accident i would have said the Volvo, it's sexier.)
If you just want mileage AND a truck look at the deisel models. No performance but survivable and decent mpg. Check your local deisel prices though.
You're from the states right? Why don't you get a VW Golf V GTI? It looks great, it's german, it's fast, it's not too big, not small either and it's sexy (yeah, I do drive Golf V but a TDI version - GTI just drinks too much)
