What kind of cable?

I think this is the right place for this.

I want to transfer a few program folders and files over from my old laptop onto my new laptop and I was wondering what kind of a cable I need to connect both computers to do this. The old computer does not have any firewire ports, only has usb 1.1, has a RJ45 jack, dial up modem jack (forget the proper name for it), and a Ps/2 port that I'm sure of. It has other ports but I can't remember what they are or where the manual is atm. The new computer has firewire ports, usb2.0, RJ45 jack, dial up modem jack, PS/2 port, and a few others. If any of that matters as to what kind of a cable would be needed.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help. (or at least stops and reads this as I'm sure this prob doesn't make much sense)

i would get a cross over cable and network the two pcs, fast, simple and the best choice

yup, a crossover cable is your best bet. something like this but preferably one that's not $24. :crosseyed:

There are alot of ways you can do that if your using "windows files and settings transfer wizard" run the wizard and select whatever you want and depending on the size of what you select.

You can use floppy's, external HD or burn to CD. then go to the new system and run the wizard. (this is if you don't want to buy a cable or set up a network)

Start/all programs/accessories/system tools/files and settings transfer wizard

Microsoft

But if you want to use a cable and theres a large amount of info this is the one I keep around when friends need to transfer from old to new system.

Serial Cable

RJ45 (crossover) is the best option. Unless you have a router in which case the type of RJ45 cable shouldn't really matter.

if he uses a router then he cant use a crossover cable so it does matter which cable he uses

Slightly off topic, but in response to themafia, most modern soho switches/routers have auto sensing ports that switch from mdi to mdi-x so you can use either a crossover or straight through cables, depending on what you have handy.

I use a crossover cable on my router and have absolutely no problems with it. :lick:

damn, cool guys! thats nice didnt know that

Thanks for all the help guys.

Bush Dogg,
I thought about doing what you said with copying all the data to cd-r's but some of the program files I wanted to transfer over were too large.

Themafia.69,
I think you got your pronouns confused again. ;)

Thanks again everyone.

Yes. But lmao. 1.49 cable 4.99 shipping. Still beats your local radio shack at 9.99 + tax.

If you have a local bestbuy or circuit city they will have them too. $5-10

Frye's Electronics has them for $2-3.

I use only crossovers at home as newegg screwed up a order for 5 25' cables.

If the local radio shack would even have one. (I'm kinda in the middle of techno-stoneage-land here)

or plug the crossover into the uplink port.

Back to the topic: I agree with the RJ45/crossover idea.

My brain is still sitting somewhere in the middle of last month so I didn't know what you meant. :dead: :speechless:

Oh and porn is ok so long as it stays off my computer. :p

Yeah, porn should stay in the bedroom and dining room where it belongs not in the home office.

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
