Hello all!

Just downloaded a file, it was a *.exe file but when i try to run it nothing happens. Is there an easy way to find out what its proper extension should be?

what was the file and were did you download it from?

its from kazaa...its meant to be a demo of The Thing. I double click it and for a split second a DOS window opens then closes. Thats all that happens.

try to open the file from a command prompt. This will show you whats in the dos window

Tried runnin it thru DOS...says program is too big to fit in memory.

I have Norton AV2003 running.

Any other ideas?

Its either a zip file inwhich if you have Winzip installed, just right click the file and click on open with winzip. If its not that, then its an iso file inwhich you just use Nero to open it.. i had the same problem.. if im not mistaken, its a white window box for the icon isnt it :D

is this a joke or a lie :) there is no a demo for The Thing
anyway it's either in zip or rar formats.
you can see what is inside any file even if you don't know its extension with hacker resources(if i am not mistaken)

"is this a joke or a lie"

neither. it is meant to be a demo for The Thing (like i said).

Thanks for the feedback....its not a zip, rar or iso file!? What else could it be and where can i find a resource hacker?

rename it to zip or rar, then if you have Winrar installed...right click on the file and choose Open with winrar.
maybe it's in cue format or dat.
just use winrar.

If it pops up a dos box for a spit second, then it's running something (i.e. it actually is an executable, not an image or zip file or whatever). Check the file size on it. If it's small, I would suspect that it's a virus/trojan of some sort. I suggest killing it, updating your antivirus, running a full scan, and watching your computer carefully for anything out of the ordinary.

I don't mean to sound paranoid, but I've had an exe file do that same thing to me once and after digging around quite a bit, I found out it was a trojan.

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
