I have been reading this thread a lot lately, and it has given me many ideas. For those of you who don't know, my current website is http://www.derekrose.net

I haven't updated it too much lately on the public side, but have been real busy behind the scenes working on internal upgrades that will soon hit mainstream. I do however, have a question.

In response to what others here have previously mentioned, and because it makes sense, I want my site to turn into my consulting business, but on a more professional level. I have already registered the domain of www.djrcs.com, which basically stands for my business name of DJR Consulting Solutions. What I would like to do, is register forum.djrcs.com, blog.djrcs.com, etc (you get the hint).

Here is my question, which will probably sound dumb - How do I register such a site as forum.djrcs.com ? I can't find anywhere that won't let me knock out the "www", and I don't want www.forum.djrcs.com b/c that is just tacky.

As an alternative, I could do www.djrcs.com/forum and all other subdirectories, but I think I would rather do the first option I mentioned. I have searched the web a bit, and notice a kind of split how some people do it one way, and some the other. For instance, there is www.osnn.net and forum.osnn.net, which is kind of why I want it because I like how it looks.

Anyone have insight on this? I've said before, and I will say again, web stuff isn't my strongest suit, so if this is really lame, feel free to laugh at me ;)

Well, I just figured out part of it, the "forum.djrcs.com" would be a subdomain. Doh! :dead:

Anyone want to chime in on pros/cons of one vs. the other? (forum.djrcs.com vs www.djrcs.com/forum)

Personally I like using subdomains. I think they look nicer.

I agree, well, after I knew what they were called at least :p

That is considered a parked domain, correct?

The only bummer I have for that is currently when a user types in http://blog.djrcs.com it forwards correctly, but changes the displayed URL to http://www.derekrose.net

I suppose I have to move the content, to get the full desired result?

fusion.unsolvedmedia.com points to unsolvedmedia.com/fusion
auctions.unsolvedmedia.com points to unsolvedmedia.com/auctions
support.usmsol.com points to usmsol.com/support

etc.

I want to have everything point to itself exclusively. I'm going to have to erase my entire directory and re-upload in order to change my primary domain pointers. Stupid Bluehost :lick:

Nah, you don't need to move the content, just box cpanel into faking it.

As for www.forum.osnn.net, that is not an parked domain, that is just another alias for forum.osnn.net

Your blog is both accessable by http://www.derekrose.net/ and http://derekrose.net/ . So all you need to do is fix your forwarder.

Besides, osnn.net is not hosted using cPanel, which means that I define the directory structure :p.

Ick, unfortunately I don't have many other options besides cPanel, as that is the most cost effective solution for me at this time.

I think I should spend some time with the cPanel manual, as it is clear I am not 100% in the know of it's features :lick:

EDIT: Within cPanel I only have the option to Park, which in essence is an Alias. I get 20 of those, woo

I don't think you should even bother puhtzing around with subdomains unless you need to use a subdomain to clearly separate parts of your site. Then again, it probably won't matter since I'm guessing once you create the subdomain forums.bla.com, you will also be able to access bla.com/forums.

I have already done most of the work, going the route of subdomains. Currently, as it is setup, forum.bla.com (as vern put it), is only accessible through that URL.

However, when I changed primary domains, I had to erase all my content. The person on the phone asked if I had a backup, of course I said yes (I had just downloaded via FTP), and of course, I forgot to get the mySQL database for my site :(

Luckily, Google had spidered the index the day before, and I at least got most of it

Lesson learned :)

haha, all you need is a MySQL backup. All other WP files are replaceable. heh.

Seems like it's the season for database accidents. :D
Glad you were able to recover your posts. Thank goodness for search engine caches! :)

Yeah, I know that now ;)

The thing I didn't realize at first, is that the MySQL database is not publically accessible (filewise). I have to contact my host and give them a singular or range of IP addresses that I want to have public access to the DB itself. Oops!

How hard would I get slapped if I wanted to use frames on my website?

So hard, the entire internet will for one second wonder wtf happened, and then keep going with their busy lives.

P.S. using frames is illegal and evil.
