I'm just going to leave this here as after about a week of pulling my hair out and finding very little information regarding the Western Digital Sentinel DX4000 and using drives that may or may not be on their compatibility list, I was finally able to figure out how to add drives to the NAS.
In my case, I was adding drives that WERE on the compatibility list but was a * (asterisk) and it turned out this drive was one of multiple versions under the same model number. Here's the steps to get the drives (and assumedly any drives) recognized by the DX4000.
**Do not insert new drives**
1. Download the most current firmware 1.7.6.21 here http://downloads.wdc.com/legacy/1_7_6_21_.zip
2. Download WD's Drive Enabler patch here http://downloads.wdc.com/sentinel/WDSentinelDriveEnabler.zip
3. Do not unzip the files.
4. Open the WD Sentinel Dashboard and navigate to the "Monitor" tab.
5. Click on the "Software Update" tab under "Monitor." See pic: https://i.imgur.com/gwYEGbz.png
6. Click "Update from file" and navigate to 1_7_6_21_.zip and hit OK. Firmware update should begin and the NAS should show "Updating Software" on the LCD.
7. Once the firmware update is complete, you can navigate to the Drive Enabler patch that you downloaded earlier, unzip it and run it.
8. Once the Drive Enabler patch has run, you can now add drives that are not on the compatibility list. Once you insert drive(s), the NAS should begin migrating automatically.
If you try to run the Drive Enabler patch without the updated firmware, you will get an error message that a dll can not be found.
